of free play with the rods will always be important
for children of any age. Worksheet

Letter
Names Color,
not number, is used to introduce math concepts via the
rods. Gattegno describes this as algebra before
arithmetic. The reasoning behind this approach is
that number is a very difficult concept for young
children to grasp. However once math concepts have been mastered
children are given the number names of the rods (which
they will already 'know' through handling the rods).
This is a very powerful method of mastering arithmetic.
There are plenty of other sites providing traditional
approaches such as counting and one to one correspondence.
These can be used alongside the approach detailed in
our math program.
